4 pole positions & 6 wins in 7 races have propelled the British driver to the no. 1 position in the driver’s standing comfortably leading with 26 points. The racing team Brawn wasn’t even sure about competing this year until Richard Branson’s Virgin rescued the team from sponsorship essentials. The Mercedes powered team is leading the pack with 96 points, 40 points ahead of the next best Red Bull racing team (Renault powered.) The teams have outperformed the OEMs, viz. McLaren-Mercedes at 5th position with 13 points and Renault at 7 with 11. The Mercedes engine is the most balanced performing engine on the grid as it is in the team that’s no.1, no.5 & no.10. No.10 being the last team with 0 points aka Force India. Last year’s constructor’s championship winner Ferrari is currently placed at 9th with little hopes of improving the position. The reliability of the car is seriously questioned and has played a vital role in marring the competitiveness.
Now, Jenson Button needs only 3 wins in the remaining 10 races to seal the Driver’s Championship as per the 2009 F1 diktat. This will make Formula1 more exciting than ever. Going by the previous races of this year, Jenson will need 3.5 races to win 3 races… Now, there can not be a 0.5 race, so 4 races. The Malaysian Grand Prix was not a complete race due to the heavy rains and points were given in halves but points are meaningless as the Driver with the most wins will take the trophy. So, again, going by the past performance and being optimistic (or pessimistic) Button will be the champion with 6 races remaining. How exciting! Hold on. There is still a window, very small, but is still there nonetheless for another driver to win the championship. Any of the drivers on the grid can lift the trophy by winning 9 out of the remaining 10 races with the exception of Sebastian Vettel who needs a further 8 races win as he has already won the Chinese Grand Prix. Very Unlikely scenario though.
